The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) workers’ strike is trending nationwide as labour unions and public sector employees continue industrial action despite warnings from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a recent court ruling.
According to reports by Vanguard, Premium Times, and ThisDay, workers under the FCT Administration resumed the strike following disagreements over the implementation of a court judgment and unresolved welfare demands. Labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have insisted that the strike should continue until workers’ demands are fully addressed.
The strike reportedly affects key public services within Abuja, including administrative offices and essential service departments, leading to disruptions for residents and businesses in the capital. Union leaders argue that the court ruling cited by the FCT Administration does not invalidate workers’ grievances or compel them to suspend lawful industrial action.
Premium Times reported that labour unions faulted the interpretation of the court judgment, stating that workers are within their rights to continue the strike. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, however, warned that an appeal filed against the court ruling does not automatically halt its enforcement. He maintained that the FCT Administration is acting within the law and urged workers to return to duty, warning of possible consequences for continued defiance.
Despite the warnings, the NLC and TUC reportedly urged FCT workers not to suspend the strike, stressing that negotiations must be concluded and agreements implemented before any return to work. Labour leaders described the strike as a necessary step to protect workers’ rights and ensure compliance with previous agreements.
