The Zamfara State Police Command has intercepted a vehicle carrying 954 pieces of explosive materials allegedly intended for use by bandits terrorizing the state. The command's spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, announced the arrest of the driver, 38-year-old Mustapha Mohammad, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, operatives from the Task Force on Illegal Mining, acting on credible intelligence, conducted the operation on January 27. The suspect was arrested while driving a Toyota Corolla (registration KUJ 933 EJ) where the explosives were found concealed in polyethylene bags.
“Preliminary investigations suggest the items were to be used by bandits for the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” Abubakar stated. The suspect is in custody, and the exhibits have been transferred to the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit for analysis and safekeeping.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to uncover the source, destination, and network behind the illicit shipment. This interception in Zamfara follows a similar seizure of suspected explosive components in Oyo State less than a week prior, indicating a worrying trend in the supply chain for terrorist materials.
The successful operation underscores the police's proactive efforts to disrupt the logistics sustaining banditry and terrorism in Nigeria's North-West region.
