The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of a Part Three medical student, Timilehin Toromade.
The university management confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju. According to the release, the deceased student, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, was believed to have died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The statement disclosed that Toromade, an 18-year-old student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery, may have passed away shortly after 2 a.m. One of his roommates reportedly opened the door for another medical student living in the same building around that time, suggesting the student was alive shortly before the incident.

“The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has received with profound shock, deep sorrow and a heavy heart the devastating news of the sudden passing of an eighteen-year-old Part Three medical student who reportedly died in his sleep,” the statement read.
Reacting to the loss, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, classmates, colleagues and friends of the deceased. He described the incident as deeply painful and distressing to the entire university community.
“The entire University community is united in grief over the untimely departure of a student who embraced the rigours of medical training with the hope of healing others and serving humanity,” Bamire said. “The loss of a young life filled with promise and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture.”
The management assured the public that the university is working closely with relevant authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident, in line with established medical and institutional procedures.
OAU also stated that appropriate support systems are being put in place to assist students and staff members who have been emotionally affected by the loss. The institution called on students, staff, alumni and friends of the university to remain calm, compassionate and prayerful during the period of mourning.
