Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has strongly rejected threats and accusations made by United States President Donald Trump, who alleged that the Colombian leader is involved in drug trafficking.
The exchange followed recent military actions by the United States in Venezuela, where U.S. forces reportedly launched airstrikes on military targets in Caracas as part of a controversial operation to remove President Nicolás Maduro from power.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump accused Colombia of being “very sick” and alleged that it was being run by a leader involved in cocaine production.

“He has cocaine mills and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long,” Trump claimed.
When asked whether Colombia could face similar military action to Venezuela, Trump responded, “It sounds good to me,” adding that such actions were justified because, according to him, “they kill a lot of people.”
President Petro swiftly responded to the accusations via the social media platform X, firmly denying any involvement in drug trafficking.
“Stop slandering me, Mr Trump,” Petro wrote. “My name does not appear in court records.”
Petro further criticised the United States’ military actions in the region, accusing Washington of abducting Venezuela’s president without legal justification.
“That’s not how you threaten a Latin American president who emerged from the armed struggle and then from the people of Colombia’s fight for peace,” he added.
In a subsequent post, Petro stated, “Friends do not bomb.”
Colombia’s Foreign Ministry also weighed in, describing Trump’s comments as “unacceptable interference” and demanding respect for the country’s sovereignty.
Despite being long-standing military and economic allies, relations between Colombia and the United States have become strained since the beginning of Trump’s second term, with frequent disagreements over issues such as migration, tariffs, and regional security.
The escalating rhetoric has raised concerns among international observers over growing tensions in Latin America.
