The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the rollout of comprehensive security measures to prevent attacks during the Christmas and New Year festivities across Nigeria.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria, working alongside other security agencies, have intensified operations in identified vulnerable areas nationwide.
According to Onoja, additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations, key routes, and high-risk zones, while special forces units and air support elements have been placed on high alert to ensure rapid response to any security threat.
“Robust and proactive measures aimed at preventing any attacks during the Christmas festivities have been emplaced. Additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations and routes,” the statement read.
The DHQ revealed that surveillance activities, including aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering, have been heightened to track the movements and communication patterns of suspected criminal groups.
Unit commanders have also been directed to strengthen patrols, establish fortified checkpoints, and collaborate closely with community leaders, vigilante groups, and state security outfits to maintain law and order.
“Surveillance efforts have been intensified, while commanders are to maintain close collaboration with communities and local security formations,” Onoja added.
The military assured Nigerians of its commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that national security remains a top priority as citizens prepare for the festive season.
Onoja further urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, stressing that public cooperation is critical to maintaining national security.
Similarly, the Rivers State Police Command announced enhanced security deployments across the state, including waterways, religious centres, hotels, motor parks, and recreational areas.
The police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, said tactical teams have been strategically positioned to ensure visible policing, strengthen surveillance, and enable rapid response throughout the Yuletide period.
Both the military and police extended goodwill messages to Nigerians, assuring citizens of peaceful celebrations.
