The Anambra State Police Command has arrested five suspected armed robbers who allegedly disguised themselves as vigilante operatives to rob unsuspecting passengers along Ring Road, Nibo in Awka South Local Government Area.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga and made available to Punch.
According to Ikenga, the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu following intelligence-led investigations into criminal conspiracy and armed robbery in the area.
During the operation, police recovered two pump-action guns, five live cartridges, an ash-coloured shuttle bus, face masks, number plates and other incriminating items allegedly used in the commission of crimes.
“Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, arrested five suspects and recovered firearms and other items at Ring Road, Nibo,” Ikenga stated.
He identified the suspects as Solomon Saddah, Okolocha George Kaosisochukwu, John Obi Ogwaju, Chukwuemeka Chisom Ikenwa, and Eze Obinna Joshua all male.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly operated a shuttle bus while posing as vigilante personnel, using the disguise to gain the trust of passengers before carrying out robberies.
“During interrogation, the suspects admitted their involvement in criminal activities and revealed how they operated under the guise of vigilante operatives,” Ikenga added.
The police said the suspects are currently cooperating with investigators and providing information that could lead to the arrest of other members of the criminal network.
Ikenga reassured residents of Anambra State of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies.
He added that further updates on the investigation and prosecution of the suspects would be communicated in due course.
