A Lagos-based lawyer and Notary Public, Ifenyinwa Christopher, has recounted a harrowing experience in which she was allegedly attacked, robbed, and almost killed by a shuttle driver along the Asaba–Benin Expressway in Delta State.
Speaking in an interview with Punch Christopher said the incident occurred on December 19 when she traveled to Asaba to attend a burial ceremony. According to her, she had chartered a shuttle bus around 8 p.m. from the airport area of Asaba, unaware that the driver was allegedly armed.
She explained that trouble began when the vehicle reached the Ogwashi-Uku axis of the expressway. The driver reportedly stopped suddenly, pulled out a gun, and demanded that she hand over all her belongings.
“While we were on the road around Ogwashi-Uku, he suddenly stopped and brought out a gun. He started hitting me and ordered me to put my head down. The area was dark, and there was nobody around,” she said.
Christopher stated that after surrendering her valuables, including her phone and money, the driver allegedly threatened to kill her, claiming he had killed others in the past. She added that the attacker physically assaulted her, injuring her eyes.
“I begged him to let me come down, but he refused. I kicked the door open and jumped out of the vehicle,” she narrated.
She further alleged that the driver reversed the shuttle and ran over her twice before fleeing the scene. Injured and helpless, Christopher said she crawled into a nearby bush, where she hid until daybreak.
At dawn, she managed to reach the expressway, where villagers and police officers from Akwukwu-Igbo Division found her and rushed her to a government hospital for treatment.
“The police told me they had been receiving reports of armed robberies by shuttle drivers in that area,” she added.
The lawyer has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Delta State Government to urgently address the growing insecurity along the Asaba–Benin Expressway, citing the lack of police checkpoints, patrols, and traffic infrastructure.
When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said he would verify the incident and respond. As of the time of filing the report, no official response had been received.
