Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed the story behind his collaboration with fellow Nigerian artist Omah Lay, clarifying that it stemmed from a misunderstanding about his intentions.
Last year, Omah Lay publicly admitted he believed Davido “hated” him until the DMW boss played his songs during a livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos. After noticing Omah Lay’s reaction on social media, Davido reached out to the singer to clear the air.
“How Omah Lay and I got together was, Kai Cenat came to Nigeria and I was driving him to the club, and then Omah Lay’s song came up,” Davido explained. “He was like, ‘Who is this?’ I said, ‘Oh! This is Omah Lay, he is hot.’ The next day, Omah Lay tweeted, ‘Wow! Davido gave me a shoutout on a livestream, I thought he hated me.’ I DMed him, ‘Why would you think I hate you? We’ve never met.’”

The interaction led to several collaborations, with the duo completing about four tracks before deciding to release “With You.” The song is featured on Davido’s fifth album, 5ive, and has already been nominated for the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
