The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has uncovered 2,658 illegal admissions across 17 tertiary institutions in Nigeria during the 2024/2025 academic session. The revelation comes as several public universities wrapped up their 2025/2026 admission processes on Friday.
According to Saturday Punch, the flagged admissions were identified during an institutional compliance analysis conducted by JAMB in Abuja. The board noted that these admissions were carried out outside its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), making them invalid under current regulations.
The data obtained shows that Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (1,847) topped the list of affected institutions, followed by Osun State University (492), Abubakar Tafari Ali Polytechnic (148), and the Federal College of Animal and Health Production (66). Others include the University of Calabar (28), College of Education, Oro (12), Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (12), Redeemer’s University (5), Pan-Atlantic University (5), Nigerian Army College of Education (2), Kwara State Polytechnic (1), and Best Solution Polytechnic (1), among others.

JAMB emphasized that any admission not processed through CAPS is considered illegal and warned candidates against accepting such offers. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 JAMB policy meeting, warned that strict sanctions, including the withdrawal of institutional licenses and the punishment of complicit officials, would follow any institution found engaging in admission malpractice.
Introduced in 2017, CAPS was designed to ensure transparency, fairness, and merit-based student placement in tertiary institutions. The platform allows candidates to accept, reject, or track their admission status directly. Students who accept offers outside CAPS risk being barred from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after graduation.
With the conclusion of the 2025/2026 admission cycle, JAMB reiterated its commitment to maintaining integrity and accountability within Nigeria’s education system.
