Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described most Yahoo boys as “geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation.”
Obi made the remarks in Onitsha during a youth-led convention, where he served as a guest speaker. The former governor urged the Nigerian government and society to focus on redirecting the intelligence and creativity of internet fraudsters towards productive innovation and national development.

“I told the youths that some of our so-called Yahoo boys are geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation. Their creativity and courage, if properly guided, can drive innovation and national growth,” Obi stated.
He emphasized that Nigeria cannot achieve greatness while celebrating corruption and rewarding dishonesty, stressing that the same vices plaguing the youth mirror the corruption within the political class.

“While money is necessary, it represents only a small part of true wealth,” Obi continued. “Real wealth uplifts both individuals and society, promotes education, reduces poverty, and creates opportunities for others to live dignified lives.”
Obi disclosed that he had cut short his travels abroad after learning about the convention, noting that he was deeply moved to address the moral decay among young Nigerians.
He also expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s omission from the IMF’s list of top-performing African economies, linking the nation’s slow progress to poor leadership and misplaced priorities.
“Nigeria is blessed with abundant resources; what we lack is the will to do what is right. Once we embrace justice, fairness, and merit, our nation’s greatness will naturally unfold,” Obi said.
He concluded by urging young Nigerians to shun greed, embrace creativity, and redirect their passion towards building a just and innovative nation.
