The people of Bindi-Jebbu community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State were thrown into mourning as 27 victims of a deadly gunmen attack were laid to rest in a mass burial held on Friday, July 25, 2025.
The brutal incident, which occurred on July 15, saw armed men storm the quiet village during the early hours, killing 27 farmers, including men and women, and leaving several others critically injured while they slept. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, but many succumbed to their injuries.
During the emotional burial ceremony, the Chairman of Riyom LGA, Bature Shuwa, expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing security crisis affecting rural communities across the region.
“My people of Bindi-Jebu and the greater Riyom community, we are gathered here today in unspeakable grief… twenty-seven precious lives, cut down in a cruel and senseless act of violence,” Shuwa said in his address.
He extended condolences to the grieving families and stressed that the community’s loss is a shared wound in the heart of all of Riyom. He also vowed that the government would not relent in its pursuit of justice, peace, and safety for its people.
Shuwa appreciated the efforts of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who paid a personal visit to Bindi in the wake of the massacre. His presence was seen as a show of solidarity and brought comfort to the devastated community.
“The love shown by His Excellency will never be forgotten,” he added.
As the Plateau State Government delegation also attended the burial, the message was clear—the lives lost will not be forgotten, and the quest for justice remains alive. The ceremony ended with prayers for peace and a call for renewed unity among communities.
