Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has delivered a scathing response to former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his recent comments about hunger in Nigeria.
During a 60th birthday celebration event, Amaechi made headlines by stating,
“We’re all hungry, all of us are. If you’re not hungry, I am… If you want us to remove the man in power, we can remove him.”
According to Punch Newspapers, the comment, which was widely interpreted as political posturing, drew a sharp rebuke from Wike, who dismissed Amaechi’s hunger remark as hypocritical and politically motivated.
“I don’t understand why a man like Amaechi would choose his 60th birthday to lie to Nigerians about being hungry,” Wike said during a press briefing in Abuja.
“He was Speaker from 1999 to 2007, Governor from 2007 to 2015, and Minister from 2015 to 2023. He never spoke about hunger during those years.”
Wike suggested that Amaechi’s claim of being hungry is less about economic hardship and more about a craving for political relevance, stating,
“Now they are regrouping. They are only hungry for power.”
The clash between the two former governors of Rivers State, who have long had a politically tense relationship, is now reigniting national debate over political sincerity, especially among opposition figures. Wike further stated that Amaechi, who served as the Director-General of Buhari's campaign, failed to secure even 25% of the vote in Rivers State, and is unfit to criticize the current administration.
