The special broadcast is part of a series of events marking Nigeria’s 26th year of uninterrupted democratic governance.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, on behalf of the Inter-Ministerial Committee’s Director of Information & Public Relations, Tinubu will also attend a joint session of the National Assembly at noon in Abuja.

However, unlike previous years, there will be no Democracy Day parade this year. Instead, a public lecture themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms” will be held at the State House Conference Centre at 4 p.m.

This will be President Tinubu’s third Democracy Day celebration since assuming office in May 2023 after winning a tightly contested general election.

Democracy Day, originally marked on May 29, was moved to June 12 by the Buhari administration in 2018 to honor the late MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election widely regarded as Nigeria’s most credible.

Despite over two decades of civilian rule, there are growing concerns over the health of Nigeria’s democracy. Media personality and opposition figure Dele Momodu voiced his concerns during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday.

“I’m very happy that today coincides with the lead-up to June 12, so that if we still have any iota of conscience left, we’ll realise we have damaged this democracy,” Momodu said.

He added, “On the eve of June 12, Nigeria is virtually back to civilian dictators who don’t care how you feel or what you think. Nigerians are hungry. We’ve damaged this democracy, and I hope we’ve not damaged it beyond repair.”

As Tinubu prepares to address the nation, many will listen not just for celebration, but for signs of reform, progress, and renewed democratic values.
