Nigerian Navy intercepts smuggled fuel and destroys illegal refinery in Delta




In a major breakthrough against oil theft and smuggling, the Nigerian Navy has intercepted a boat smuggling refined fuel to Cameroon and dismantled an illegal refining site in Delta State.

According to a statement published on the Nigerian Navy’s verified Facebook page, the interception was executed on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, by personnel from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Ibaka.

“Forward Operating Base IBAKA intercepted and impounded a wooden boat laden with drums containing illegally refined PMS which was en route the Republic of Cameroon,” the Navy confirmed in its post.

A day after the interception, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, operatives from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA discovered and destroyed a makeshift refinery in Obodo Omadino community, Warri South-West LGA, Delta State.

    The illegal facility reportedly contained four dug-out pits, a pumping machine, multiple drums filled with crude oil, and another wooden boat used for transporting the stolen products.

    These back-to-back operations mark another milestone in the Navy's strategic clampdown on illicit oil activities and cross-border smuggling that continue to affect Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region.

    “These operations reflect the Nigerian Navy’s unwavering resolve to stamp out economic sabotage and protect Nigeria’s oil assets,” the statement emphasized.

    The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to maritime safety and the protection of national economic interests, highlighting its zero-tolerance stance on illegal trade in petroleum products.
