A fresh wave of global concern has erupted after a Nigerian man, Michael Kenechukwu Ekemezie, tragically died while in police custody in Lausanne, Switzerland, on May 25, 2025.

The 39-year-old, originally from Awka North in Anambra State, reportedly collapsed and died under what his family described as “suspicious and distressing” circumstances, less than an hour after being detained.
According to a report from AFP, Swiss authorities stated that the incident occurred during a routine drug-related check when Ekemezie allegedly attempted to flee but was restrained and later collapsed during questioning. Emergency services reportedly attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead before 10:00 p.m.
Eyewitness accounts, however, painted a harrowing picture. Ekemezie was said to have cried out repeatedly, “You’re hurting me,” as he was forcibly restrained by officers.

In a formal petition submitted to the Swiss Embassy in Nigeria on May 30, the deceased’s family, represented by renowned human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, demanded a full, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
“This is not just a legal matter, it is a human tragedy. A mother grieves. A family mourns. A nation watches with bated breath,” Ejiofor stated.
The Swiss Embassy, in an official response dated June 4, confirmed that the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office had launched an investigation. However, citing privacy and legal protocols, they refrained from sharing further details.
Ejiofor further emphasized that justice must not be hidden behind bureaucracy.
“Michael Ekemezie’s life mattered. His name must not fade. His story must not be buried,” he declared.
The Nigerian Embassy in Bern and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) have both pledged to pursue the case with urgency. NIDCOM confirmed on May 30 that it had opened its own investigation and was in contact with the family and Swiss authorities.

The family is calling on the Swiss Government, international organizations, and human rights advocates worldwide to ensure accountability, urging Switzerland to uphold its reputation as a defender of civil liberties and due process.
