A 67-year-old French tourist, Mr. Pietier Gilles, was discovered dead in his room at Hotel Jovina in Gboko town, Benue State, prompting a police investigation into the mysterious circumstances of his death.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama on X, Gilles became unwell on June 7, a day after arriving at the hotel on June 6. Despite the hotel’s offer to transport him to a hospital, he declined. Concerned for his safety, management contacted a medical practitioner, who later confirmed Gilles had passed away.
Hotel manager Emmanuel Terhide Laha reported the incident to the “A” Division Police Station in Gboko at approximately 5:45 p.m. on June 8. The Divisional Police Officer led a patrol team to Hotel Jovina, where they photographed the scene and evacuated the body to Gboko General Hospital for preservation and an autopsy.
According to police sources, Gilles had embarked on a long-distance sports bicycle tour and entered Nigeria from the Niger Republic on May 19, 2025. His journey across West Africa was being closely followed by cycling enthusiasts online.
