Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stated he will not contest the 2027 presidential election against President Bola Tinubu, despite remaining a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, Wike, who ran for the PDP presidential ticket in 2023, declared: “I will not contest again. I cannot contest against someone I’m working with. Who would win, if not him?” His remarks come amid growing speculation about his next political move and his loyalty to the PDP.
According to the BBC interview, Wike strongly criticised some PDP leaders, accusing them of being politically irrelevant. He pointed out that several prominent former governors do not command significant influence, lacking even one National Assembly member or a governor.
“Achike Udenwa has no National Assembly member. The former governor of Ebonyi doesn’t have one either. You didn’t produce a governor, yet you issue threats?” he said. Wike also dismissed suggestions that he might defect to the APC, declaring, “I am not a fearful man. I built the house, and I will not let anyone frustrate me out.”
His comments follow a wave of PDP defections, including Delta State’s governor and several lawmakers, indicating deep internal turmoil within the party ahead of 2027.
