Taraba student electrocuted while flying PDP flag during VP visit

Tragedy struck in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Wednesday when Saanmoyol Paul, a 100-level student of Taraba State Polytechnic, was electrocuted while displaying the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during a political rally.

According to reports, the incident occurred along the Roadblock to ATC Road route during the visit of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was representing President Bola Tinubu at the Taraba International Investment Summit (TARAVEST). 

The iron rod attached to the flag being carried by Paul reportedly made contact with a high-tension cable, resulting in a severe electric shock.

    Speaking from his hospital bed at Gilead Hospital Magami, Paul, struggling to speak, appealed for urgent government intervention. “My condition keeps getting worse. I need help to be moved to another hospital,” he said. Hospital staff confirmed he arrived in critical condition and, despite over 15 hours of treatment, has not shown signs of improvement.

    Witnesses said Paul was among several youths waving party flags to show support during the high-profile visit. The unfortunate accident has drawn concern from local residents and party officials, who are calling for improved safety measures during political events.

    The state government has yet to issue an official response regarding assistance or investigation into the incident.
