Self-proclaimed Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, is currently facing terrorism-related charges in Finland, with prosecutors requesting a six-year prison sentence.
Ekpa appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court, accused of leading a separatist movement, inciting criminal activity online, and potentially ordering weapons from abroad.

Prosecutors allege that Ekpa, who has lived in Finland since 2007, used digital platforms to promote terrorist activities in connection with pro-Biafra groups. Finnish authorities have worked closely with Nigerian security services to gather evidence, although they admit difficulty verifying some of the claims originating from Africa.

“We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity,” said state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala. However, Ekpa’s lawyer challenged the credibility of the evidence, especially data obtained from Nigerian sources.

The court proceedings coincided with Biafra Day, marked by a sit-at-home protest in parts of southeastern Nigeria. While states like Abia, Imo, and Enugu observed the call due to fear of violence, Ebonyi defied the directive with normal business activities.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly disassociated itself from Ekpa. IPOB declared he is not a member and condemned his actions, describing him merely as a "content creator." IPOB further criticized the timing of the trial, calling it “a calculated insult” meant to mock Biafra’s historical struggle.
Ekpa has denied all charges, including tax fraud and alleged involvement in weapons procurement.
