In a recent disclosure, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) revealed that more than 5,000 candidates who scored 300 and above in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) were unable to secure admission into Nigerian universities.
According to a report by Punch Newspapers, JAMB attributed this anomaly to several non-academic factors. These include incorrect O'Level subject combinations, low scores in post-UTME screenings, failure to accept admission offers, duplication of applications, and mismatches in uploaded credentials.
The examination body emphasized that a high UTME score does not automatically guarantee university admission. "Scoring high in UTME is commendable, but candidates must also meet other admission criteria set by their chosen institutions," a JAMB official stated.
This revelation has sparked discussions among educational stakeholders, with many calling for increased awareness about the comprehensive admission requirements.
