Workers’ Day Showdown: NUATE Threatens Strike Against Turkish Airlines Over Alleged Union Suppression

On May 1, 2025, during the Workers’ Day celebration, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) issued a stern warning to Turkish Airlines, threatening industrial action over alleged victimization of employees for union involvement.

NUATE President, Comrade Ben Nnabue, accused the airline’s Nigerian management of obstructing workers’ rights to unionize, including denying them a union office, contrary to Nigerian Labour Law.

Despite mediation efforts by former Ministers of Aviation and Labour, the dispute remains unresolved. Nnabue highlighted that Turkish Airlines’ legal case against the union was dismissed by the National Industrial Court for lack of merit. He urged NUATE members in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory to prepare for industrial action following the May Day celebrations.

This development underscores ongoing tensions between labor unions and airline management in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for adherence to labor laws and workers’ rights.
