In a dramatic security lapse, 10 inmates escaped from a New Orleans jail early Friday by crawling through a hole behind a toilet, prompting an intense manhunt and investigations into possible insider assistance.
According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the escape began at 12:22 a.m., when inmates manipulated a faulty cell door, accessed a compromised cell, and slipped through a hole hidden behind the toilet. They then exited through a loading dock, scaled a barbed-wire fence using blankets, and disappeared into the night near Interstate 10.
Three inmates have since been captured. Kendell Myles, charged with attempted second-degree murder, was found hiding beneath a car in a French Quarter hotel garage. Robert Moody and Dkenan Dennis were also re-arrested, with Dennis located near Chef Menteur Highway.
However, eight escapees remain at large, including four facing second-degree murder charges—Corey Boyd, Lenton Vanburen, Jermaine Donald, and Derrick Groves. Authorities now suspect the escape may have been aided by someone inside the facility, and faulty cell locks may have played a role.
The breach went unnoticed until the 8:30 a.m. headcount, hours after the inmates fled. Discarded orange uniforms were later found nearby, suggesting they had changed clothes to evade detection.
Law enforcement is urging the public to remain alert. The escape has sparked widespread concern over jail security in Orleans Parish.
