The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a new and shocking method of drug smuggling involving the concealment of cocaine within traditional Nigerian fashion accessories — specifically, 'aso-ebi' male caps (fila) and female headgears (gele).
This revelation was made public by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday. Babafemi urged Nigerians to be vigilant and avoid helping others transport cultural outfits overseas, warning that they could unknowingly be used for drug trafficking.
“In case you’re asked to help take as part of your luggage to Europe or elsewhere any aso ebi fila and gele (traditional male cap and female headgear), the latest seizure of cocaine concealed in such materials uncovered by #ndlea_nigeria will make you think twice,” he wrote, posting both a video and a photograph of the recovered drugs.
According to a report by PUNCH Online, this incident follows a similar bust where officers discovered a specially modified section in an oil tanker used for transporting narcotics across the country.
This latest tactic shows how traffickers are evolving their methods to bypass detection. The NDLEA continues to heighten its efforts to combat the drug menace and is urging the public to remain cautious and report suspicious packages or requests.
