The Lagos State Government has announced its commitment to reducing slums in the state by 50% annually through ongoing urban regeneration efforts.
This major infrastructure push is being implemented via the Lagos State Urban Renewal Authority (LASURA), under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Speaking at a ministerial press briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, revealed that the state had upgraded 36 roads across slum-prone areas such as Somolu, Bariga, Surulere, and Ifelodun.
Dr. Babatunde explained that these regeneration efforts include the construction and rehabilitation of roads, comprehensive drainage systems, and water reticulation projects. “We have upgraded six roads in Ifelodun LCDA, 11 in Bariga LCDA, 13 in Somolu, and six in Surulere LGA,” he stated.

In addition to road works, the state government completed the Arobadade Channel and water supply projects in Bariga and Ifelodun LCDAs. Other ongoing renewal efforts are in Lakowe Phase II, Adeniji Adele Low-cost Housing Estate, Jakande Estate Ilasan, and other informal communities in Ajegunle, Alimosho, Agege, and Ajeromi-Ifelodun.
The goal, according to Dr. Babatunde, is to combat urban decay and improve the living standards of residents by systematically transforming underserved areas.
