A U.S. federal judge has halted Donald Trump’s controversial plan to dismantle the Department of Education, ruling the move unlawful.
Judge Myong Joun (appointed by Joe Biden) issued a preliminary injunction, stopping the administration from firing half of the department’s employees and transferring student loan management to the Small Business Administration.
Trump has long criticized the department, claiming it failed to improve education despite massive federal funding. In March, he signed an executive order to begin dismantling it, arguing that states should control education.
