Football broadcasting legend Gary Lineker will leave the BBC after the 2024/25 season, following backlash over an Instagram story containing antisemitic imagery.
The BBC confirmed on Monday that Lineker, 64, would not participate in future World Cup or FA Cup coverage. His last appearance will be this Sunday on Match of the Day, ending his 26-year run on the iconic show.
The controversy began when Lineker shared an image about Zionism, which included a rat—an image widely condemned online. He quickly deleted it and issued an apology: “I take full responsibility. That image does not reflect my views.”
In a new statement, Lineker said, “Football has been my life. I deeply regret the upset caused. Stepping down is the right decision.” BBC Director-General Tim Davie praised Lineker’s decades of service but emphasized that the presenter recognized the seriousness of the incident.
Lineker, once BBC’s highest-paid presenter, has had past run-ins with the network over social media impartiality rules. His removal comes as part of an ongoing effort by the BBC to maintain editorial standards.
He will not lead BBC coverage for the 2026 World Cup as originally planned, making this weekend’s Premier League finale his final appearance on Match of the Day.
