The Delta State Police Command has refuted allegations made by a Nigerian woman who claimed officers assaulted her Ghanaian-German husband during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Agbor-Benin expressway.
The viral video, which surfaced on social media, shows the woman accusing police officers of harassment after they allegedly confronted her husband over a pair of camouflage trousers—an item reportedly prohibited under Nigerian law. According to her, an officer held her husband by the neck during the altercation.
However, in an official statement, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, labeled the allegations as “false and baseless.” He explained that on May 8, 2025, officers stopped a commercial vehicle with seven occupants for routine checks. The woman, who was among the passengers, reportedly became agitated and began hurling insults at the officers while filming the encounter.
Edafe emphasized that the officers conducted themselves professionally and did not assault anyone. He further accused the woman of attempting to stir public outrage by appealing to social media audiences.
“The command under CP Olufemi Abaniwonda does not tolerate any form of misconduct or abuse of power,” Edafe stated.
The police have reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism and urged the public not to spread misinformation.
