In a chilling escalation of insurgent violence in northeast Nigeria, Boko Haram terrorists have brutally murdered at least 17 civilians in Malam Karanti, a village near Baga in Borno State. The victims — primarily farmers and fishermen — were accused of supporting rival jihadist group ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province), according to local militia leaders and security reports.
The attack occurred on Thursday afternoon along the shores of Lake Chad, where the victims were either harvesting crops or fishing. According to TheCable, Babakura Kolo, a local anti-insurgency militia commander, said, “So far, 17 bodies have been recovered, and we fear more are yet to be found.” Several others were reportedly abducted, while search efforts for missing villagers continue.
Kolo explained that Boko Haram considers many rural residents to be collaborators with ISWAP, with whom they’ve clashed violently since their split in 2016. A second militia source, Umar Ari, confirmed that the attackers stormed the village at about 2 p.m., unleashing terror on unsuspecting locals.
Shockingly, just hours later, ISWAP militants launched a separate offensive on a joint military base in Wulgo, killing five Nigerian and Cameroonian soldiers. This double assault highlights the deadly rivalry between the two factions, both notorious for mass killings and targeting civilians suspected of aiding their enemies.
As the insurgency worsens, farmers, fishermen, and herders remain vulnerable. In recent months, both factions have killed scores of civilians in Borno’s rural regions, making the area one of the most dangerous zones in Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis.
