Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei tragically passed away after being set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, during a domestic dispute.
The horrific incident occurred at her home in Western Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, leaving Cheptegei with severe burns covering 75% of her body.

Cheptegei represented Uganda in the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing 44th in the women’s marathon event. Authorities report that the attack stemmed from a land ownership disagreement.
Ndiema, who also suffered burn injuries, is being treated at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

The tragedy echoes previous incidents involving athletes in Kenya, such as the murders of Agnes Tirop in 2021 and Damaris Mutua in 2022, both linked to domestic violence.
