The spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Rotimi Akin, has clarified that lawmakers earn N600,000 every month, contrary to the widespread speculation of N900,000.

Akin made this announcement on Wednesday in Abuja, stressing the commitment of the House members to a 50% salary reduction to alleviate public hardship.

Akin stated, “The House of Representatives has been inundated with reports from some media outlets claiming discrepancies in the salaries of members, suggesting we received 100% of our July salaries.

The report alleged that our salary amounted to N936,979. We wish to clarify that the actual monthly salary for members is N600,000, after deductions for advances such as housing, which are paid at the commencement of the tenure.”

He explained that the member who displayed his salary on a TV program was an exceptional case due to his late assumption of office through a court decision. The House remains committed to the resolution passed on July 18, 2024, mandating a 50% reduction in salaries for six months.
