Medical Emergency in Katsina: 64 Secondary Students Suffer Complications from Worm Infection Drugs

At least 64 students of Government Science Secondary School, Batagarawa, Katsina State, have been emergency-hospitalised after suffering severe medical complications from anti-schistosomiasis (bilharzia) deworming drugs administered during a school health intervention program.

The incident occurred on October 26, 2026, when multiple students developed rapid-onset adverse symptoms, including persistent vomiting, acute abdominal pains, and severe dizziness.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported that several students arrived at healthcare facilities unconscious.

Emergency responders transported the affected teenagers to General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital in Batagarawa, Katsina General Hospital, and Turai Yar'Adua Maternal and Child Hospital for urgent stabilization. Medical Director Dr. Auwal Sani confirmed that while some arrived unconscious, the students are making positive progress following treatment.

Beyond the medical crisis, reports indicate that certain school teachers physically assaulted students who initially complained of feeling sick, accusing them of pretending to be ill to skip classes instead of immediately securing medical attention.

Security analysts and concerned parents, including Ma'aruf Sani, have called on the Katsina State Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education to launch an immediate joint inquiry.

The investigation will verify the specific batch of praziquantel or anti-worm medication used, assess if dosage protocols aligned with height and weight screening guidelines, and discipline school staff involved in physical assault.

"The students experienced vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and dizziness... The Katsina State Government must investigate the medication, its dosage, whether proper supervision was provided, and hold responsible teachers accountable." — Zagazola Makama, Security Analyst
