The Presidency has strongly criticized representatives of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and Archbishop Emeritus Cardinal John Onaiyekan following public comments regarding their recent closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
The friction followed an interview on Arise Television where Cardinal Onaiyekan revealed that President Tinubu rejected the bishops' presentation detailing severe economic hardship and security concerns, insisting instead that his administration was making tangible progress.

In response, Presidential aides Temitope Ajayi and Daniel Bwala faulted the cardinal for breaching confidential protocol and accused the clerics of presenting a one-sided assessment of national affairs.
Ajayi argued that while the administration acknowledges ongoing economic difficulties, the bishops dismissed major social interventions such as the NELFUND student loan scheme and improved salary payouts.
Bwala went further to allege political bias, claiming the Catholic leadership had previously shown affinity toward opposition candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 elections.
