The Lagos State Government is advancing its health infrastructure expansion strategy with the construction of the 280-bed Ojo General Hospital and a new 180-bed facility in Somolu.
Speaking during an inspection tour, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works, Dr. Adekunle Olayinka, confirmed that the Ojo project has reached 85 percent completion and is scheduled for inauguration by late 2026 or early 2027.
High-tech medical equipment, solar power installations, and specialized furnishings are currently being finalized.
In Somolu, construction has begun on a seven-floor, 180-bed facility designed to replace the existing 60-bed hospital, which currently serves an estimated catchment population of up to 10 million people.
Currently at 15 percent completion and slated for delivery in 2027, the new Somolu hospital is designated as the state's head and neck super-specialty center, focusing on maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, and ENT care.
Both facilities incorporate green engineering, renewable energy, and low-carbon technologies as part of a state-level policy to curb outbound medical tourism.
"Over the next five to 10 years, we believe every kind of medical intervention will be available in Lagos... so that outbound medical tourism will stop." — Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health
