The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is poised to make the establishment of state police formations its absolute legislative priority as lawmakers return to plenary.
The official Spokesperson of the upper chamber, Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu, confirmed that the critical constitutional amendment bill has already been successfully transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for statutory concurrence.
The leadership of the 10th National Assembly expressed robust optimism that the decentralization of Nigeria's policing architecture will be completed before the expiration of the current legislative lifespan.
Lawmakers noted that the structural reform is a direct, data-driven response to intense public demands to shift policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List.
While the momentum of daily sessions had temporarily eased due to recent political party primaries ahead of forthcoming electoral cycles, the upper chamber is returning with a unified mandate to restructure domestic security.
“Our major priority when the Senate resumes on Tuesday is to ensure that the constitutional amendment on the establishment of state police progresses smoothly. We have already transmitted the bill to the state Houses of Assembly and we want to monitor developments there... If politics is local, then security is local too. Therefore, we must involve the sub-national governments and local governments in tackling insecurity," Senate Spokesman Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu stated analytically.
Addressing other critical ecological challenges, Senator Adaramodu touched extensively on the severe flooding hitting major socio-economic hubs like Lagos, framing the issue as a global phenomenon driven by systemic climate change.
While commending the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration for its proactive deployment of drainage infrastructure and protective emergency response, the Senate spokesperson strongly urged citizens to prioritize their lives over their livelihoods by adhering strictly to state evacuation red flags in structurally compromised or flood-prone zones.
He reassured the public that the Federal Government has not abandoned the states, maintaining that robust allocations within the federal ecological fund are being actively disbursed to mitigate environmental risks nationwide.
