The Imo State Police Command has officially debunked viral online allegations suggesting that a student hostel housing undergraduates near the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, was set ablaze by suspected armed herdsmen.
The emergency situational clearance followed a wave of panic-inducing posts circulating heavily across Facebook. The false digital publications claimed that over 80 innocent students were actively trapped inside a burning residential block after a targeted arson raid by nomadic herders.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, issued a definitive counter-briefing, labeling the digital reports as entirely malicious, completely fabricated, and deliberately designed by cyber-actors to incite regional panic, public anxiety, and communal disorder.
"The command wishes to state unequivocally that the report is entirely false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents. The command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the false publication and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of causing fear, panic, or public disorder," DSP Henry Okoye clarified in an official statement.
The command management strongly urged local residents, digital publishers, and the academic community within Owerri to remain completely calm, advising the public to consistently verify sensitive updates through authorized internal security channels before cross-sharing on social networks.
Detectives have reiterated their operational commitment to preserving the peace across the Nekede axis, ensuring that standard academic and commercial routines continue without disruption while security networks actively monitor digital spaces for malicious actors spreading disinformation.
