President Bola Tinubu’s Special Investigator on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Jim Obazee, has delivered a bombshell testimony before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja, asserting that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari ought to have faced a criminal trial over an alleged $6.2 million fraud scheme executed within the apex bank.
Obazee, appearing as a key prosecution witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the high-stakes ongoing trial of former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, argued that the scope of the criminal liability must not be limited to the former governor alone.
Led in evidence by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Obazee scrutinized official documents containing a signature attributed to Buhari approving the release of the $6.2 million under the guise of funding foreign election observers, alongside directives from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

"Obazee told the court that, in his view, the alleged fraud involved several persons and should not be limited to Emefiele alone. He demanded that while Buhari should be posthumously prosecuted, former SGF Boss Mustapha must be lined up in the dock with Emefiele," court correspondents documented.
Under intense cross-examination conducted by Emefiele’s lead counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), the special investigator conceded that his panel did not recover any of the missing millions from the former CBN governor, nor did they discover any electronic records indicating that the financial proceeds were transferred into Emefiele's personal accounts.
However, Obazee maintained that internal control mechanisms, including the Abuja branch's CCTV networks and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), should have flagged the transaction.
The defense also pointed out a timeline discrepancy regarding the filing of the 20-count charge prior to Tinubu's formal directives to prepare chargeable offenses on December 19, 2023. Presiding Judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, subsequently adjourned the complex proceedings until October 20 for the continuation of the trial.
