Sebastian Beccacece's Ecuador Overcomes Early Deficit to Make Football History

In one of the most thrilling upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a resilient Ecuador national team stunned a heavily favored German side with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory in New Jersey.

The historic triumph successfully propelled the South American side into the coveted Round of 32 knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams of the tournament.

However, Ecuador's late-game heroics dealt a severe blow to Scotland's qualification ambitions, leaving Steve Clarke's Tartan Army precariously dangling in the final eighth third-place spot with other group fixtures still left to play.

The match began with early dominance from the already-qualified four-time world champions, as German winger Leroy Sane broken through to smash home a spectacular opening goal within the first 109 seconds of play.

Despite Ecuador’s protests that the goal should have been disallowed by VAR for a high foot by Aleksander Pavlovic on Pedro Vite, the goal stood.

Undeterred by the early setback, Sebastian Beccacece’s side responded just seven minutes later when Sunderland's teenage star Nilson Angulo unleashed a stunning, arrowed equalizer into the back of the net—marking La Tri's very first goal of the tournament after 40 cumulative attempts.

"Ecuador defended superbly to reach the knockout stages for just the second time in their history," sports commentators observed following the final whistle in New Jersey.

The second half was defined by high-stakes VAR drama. American referee Tori Penso initially awarded Germany a penalty kick after Joel Ordonez brought down Kai Havertz inside the box.

However, a lengthy pitchside monitor review overturned the penalty decision, revealing that Sane had committed a foul on Vite in the build-up play.

Capitalizing on the momentum, Ecuador pushed aggressively in the final minutes and found their historic winner in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata anticipated a front-post flick-on from a corner, stabbing the ball past an advancing Manuel Neuer to spark wild celebrations.
