Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju is leading national political headlines after appearing in a federal courtroom to testify as a key prosecution witness against the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.
The case is trending heavily following dramatic proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja under Judge Joyce Abdulmalik. Adeyanju was subpoenaed to stand as the second prosecution witness for the Department of State Services (DSS) in the criminal wiretapping trial involving El-Rufai.
The secret police filed a multi-count charge against the former governor under the Cybercrimes Prohibition Act (2024) and the Nigerian Communications Act (2003).

The charges stem from an interview El-Rufai granted on Arise Television on February 13, 2026, where he claimed that "someone wiretapped" the phone of National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu, allowing El-Rufai to intercept a direct order given to security operatives to arrest him at the Abuja airport.
The courtroom atmosphere intensified when the prosecution played the video recording of El-Rufai's Arise TV interview out loud as evidence.
Taking the stand, Adeyanju verified the accuracy of the footage, confirming he was present at the studio that day and heard El-Rufai state, "We listened to the conversations of the NSA."
During a heated cross-examination by defense counsel Paul Erokoro, Adeyanju clarified that while he did not personally hear El-Rufai claim he performed the hack himself, the former governor explicitly admitted that someone intercepted the calls and passed the intelligence to him.
The case has been adjourned for further trial, igniting a massive public debate regarding the legal boundaries of discussing state surveillance, cybersecurity laws, and political accountability.
