"A Day the Privileged Bought the Oppressed": ADC’s Ambassador Dare Bejide Rejects Ekiti Election Results in Entirety
The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Ekiti State gubernatorial election, Ambassador Dare Bejide, has categorically rejected the election results. He described the entire process as a fraudulent exercise that cannot stand the test of democratic integrity.
Speaking live on Arise News, Bejide alleged that the election day was characterized by massive vote-buying, systematic voter distraction, and targeted physical intimidation spearheaded by figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Ilawe-Ekiti Incident: "My Polling Unit Was a Target"
Bejide gave a harrowing eyewitness account of events at his personal polling booth—Ward 2, Unit 4, in Ilawe-Ekiti—detailing how high-ranking officials and political appointees allegedly descended on the venue with bags of cash to influence voters.
"Shortly after I voted, the Vice Chairman of the local government—a woman—came with two bags full of money," Bejide stated. "When she could not have her way, she called the Chairman, Mr. Kola, who came to threaten me. I am a senior citizen; I have been in politics for over 40 years, and there should be respect for people like us. We drew the attention of security agents, and they were completely helpless."
He further noted that a serving senator arrived shortly after with a massive security detachment.
"Senator Adamu came there with almost 50 policemen, and a political office holder under the president also came with lots of policemen. The place became rancorous and distracted me. My polling booth was turned into a political market where votes were bought freely and openly without any challenge by the police. They beat my driver; he was left in a pool of his blood and is still in the hospital."
Defending the ADC’s Structural Footprint
When pressed by the anchor on whether the ADC actually possessed the structural capacity on the ground to secure a victory against an incumbent administration, Bejide strongly rejected any notion that his party was a minor player. He emphasized that the grassroots populace genuinely supported his message, even if they were ultimately compromised by immediate financial inducements.
"I can assure you that the ADC has councilor candidates in all the 177 wards in Ekiti State for the elections in December. We have chairmanship candidates in all local governments and LCDAs, and House of Assembly candidates in all constituencies. Our party is well organized. I campaigned more than any other candidate. I went around all towns and villages, visiting artisans, carpenters, bricklayers, tailors, and printers. In the marketplaces, they mocked us because they knew that at the end of the day, what would count was the purchase of the votes."
No Economic Basis for an APC Victory
Bejide, who served as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in 2010, drew sharp fiscal comparisons between his time in office and the current administration led by Governor Biodun Oyebanji. He argued that the current government has completely failed to match its massive federal allocations with real infrastructure or social security.
"There is no basis for his victory," Bejide insisted. "This governor is the worst in terms of performance since the creation of the state in 1996. When I was in government in 2010 as SSG, our monthly allocation oscillated between 2 billion and 4 billion Naira. The last allocation of this government was 17 billion Naira. During our days with just 2 billion, we built roads, provided water, supplied electricity, and paid gratuities as and when due."
"This governor has not done any of this. The roads are in a terrible shape, there is no water, no electricity, and kidnapping is everywhere. As we speak today, some of our citizens have been in bondage for the last two months. The governor has not even visited the place, while I have been there three times as a candidate."
