The Presidency has strongly criticized a statement issued by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC), Peter Obi, which urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign from office over current national security and economic challenges.
In a sharp counter-response released on Monday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the opposition leader's demands as "childish, hollow," and a deliberate attempt to overshadow recent electoral gains recorded by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Federal Government accused the former Anambra State governor of failing to understand the legal boundaries of Nigeria's constitutional architecture, noting that he drew an incorrect structural parallel between the United Kingdom's parliamentary democracy and Nigeria's fixed four-year presidential system.
Onanuga argued that recent localized electoral outcomes in Ekiti, Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo, and Rivers states serve as an early popular referendum demonstrating that the current administration retains the confidence of the electorate.
Defending the administration’s macro-economic trajectory, the presidency stated that despite inherited economic difficulties and global inflationary pressures stemming from Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions, strategic fiscal policies have boosted foreign reserves and state revenues.
The statement concluded by advising opposition actors to refrain from using social media platforms to undermine democratic processes, urging them instead to test their popularity during the next scheduled national general elections in January 2027.
