In a major operational breakthrough aimed at curbing the internal proliferation of small arms and light weapons, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully dismantled an illicit local arms manufacturing network.
The intelligence-led tactical operation, which occurred at approximately 3:00 AM on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, resulted in the dramatic arrest of a 78-year-old prime suspect, Godwin Nduaesa, alongside his 39-year-old alleged technical accomplice, Effiong Ekpenyong, within the Okobo and Eket local government axes of the state.
The high-stakes raid was executed by operatives of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit—a specialized tactical initiative birthed by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to decisively combat emerging security threats across the federation.

According to an official statement issued in Uyo by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, acting under the strategic directives of Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare, operatives recovered a massive cache of dangerous contraband.
The items seized included three English-made double-barrel guns, two English-made single-barrel guns, ten locally fabricated single-barrel guns, four raw iron barrels ready for gun construction, gas cylinders, and two heavily stocked industrial toolboxes containing specialised fabrication implements.
A lone live cartridge was also recovered at the scene.
The police command has initiated a deep forensic investigation to trace the supply chain of these locally manufactured firearms and identify the criminal elements purchasing weapons from the syndicate.
