Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji

Celebrated Nollywood actress, director, and cultural icon, Genevieve Nnaji, has passionately called for deeper structural integration and creative partnerships among film industries across the African continent.

Speaking as a special guest on the popular international media platform, the Deadline Podcast, the Lionheart director revealed her long-term dream of seeing major African countries pull their creative resources together for large-scale movie projects.

Nnaji, who made history when her film became the first Nigerian production to be acquired by global streaming giant Netflix, noted that she is incredibly optimistic about the artistic future of the region.

Reflecting on her career goals and the current shift in the movie business, Nnaji stated:

“I think my dream has always been that we have some intercontinental production within the African region.

And I can’t wait to see that happen. Seeing a lot more female producers, directors, and filmmakers come up is also very inspiring to me.

The industry is barely 40 years old, but we’ve achieved so much in such a short time. I think we just started. I think, you know, time is still very young, and we have a lot more to achieve.”

The Imo State-born movie star, who was recently honored by the Red Sea Film Foundation during the Women in Cinema gala at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, emphasized that African stories possess unique cultural depths that deserve global recognition.

Fans who have missed her presence on the screen will not have to wait much longer.

Following a long sabbatical from the spotlight, the Nollywood veteran is set to make a major return to the screen in Wahala, an upcoming six-part thriller series produced by BBC Studios, adapted from the acclaimed novel by Theresa Ikoko.
