The Imo State Police Command has launched an intensive search and rescue operation following the abduction of Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma, a 17-year-old student at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
The victim, a 100-level Microbiology student, was reportedly seized by gunmen along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in the Owerri West Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed on Tuesday that Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso has ordered the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take over the investigation immediately.
Local vigilantes have joined police operatives in combing the surrounding bushes and adjoining communities.
“The directives are part of proactive measures aimed at ensuring the safe rescue of the victim and the swift arrest of the perpetrators,” Okoye stated.
According to Qubes Magazine research online, the FUTO/Ihiagwa axis has seen a reinforcement of security patrols and visibility policing following the incident to reassure the student community.
The police have urged anyone with useful information to contact the command via their emergency line at 0803 477 3600.
