NITDA Moves to Secure Nigeria’s Digital Future with New Data Governance Framework
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is intensifying efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s control over its data systems.
Speaking at GITEX Africa in Morocco, the Director-General of NITDA emphasized that the agency is building a national software infrastructure to ensure "digital sovereignty" and protect locally generated data.
The DG clarified that Nigeria’s strategy is not about excluding global tech giants like China or hyperscalers from the US, but about ensuring that value is created and captured within the country.
“It is about how we, as a country, have control and are able to shape our digital future,” the DG stated. “We want them to come, work with local partners, and let us capture that value here.”
As part of this drive, NITDA is collaborating with Ericsson on a memorandum of understanding that includes a joint innovation hub and a national hackathon supervised by the Vice President.
The agency aims to mirror global standards, such as the EU's Data Governance Act, to treat digital systems as critical national infrastructure.
