The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a critical warning, identifying 14,118 communities across 33 states and the FCT as high flood risk areas for 2026.
Speaking at the public presentation of the Annual Flood Outlook in Abuja, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, revealed that 226 Local Government Areas (LGAs) are expected to face severe flooding this year.
High-risk states include Lagos, Rivers, Kano, Delta, Anambra, Benue, and Kogi, among others. Notably, Ekiti State is the only state in the federation not classified under the moderate flood risk category.
To combat this, the government has introduced community-based flood forecasting to provide tailored warnings for specific localities.
Representing President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, reaffirmed the administration's commitment to strengthening rescue teams and emergency response systems.
“With improved communication and strategic planning, the government is confident of overcoming current challenges and delivering better outcomes for citizens,” the President stated.
