Popular Catholic Priest, Father Kelvin Ugwu, has voiced his deep frustration with the Nigerian justice system following reports of an Imam placing a death bounty on a pastor.
The Imam allegedly accused the pastor of insulting Prophet Mohammed, initially offering N1 million before doubling the bounty to N2 million in a public boast.
Reacting to the development, Father Ugwu drew a grim comparison to the 2022 killing of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto.
He reminded Nigerians that despite the brutal nature of her death—recorded on camera by her classmates—the suspects were defended by 34 lawyers and eventually walked free.
"A Muslim Imam publicly places a one million Naira bounty on the head of a pastor and the Imam is still walking freely... Now, he has come out publicly again to boast and doubled the bounty to 2M and dared anyone to arrest him," Fr. Ugwu wrote.
The cleric lamented that the "disquieting silence" from authorities regarding the Imam's open threat to life highlights a systemic failure in the country.
He concluded his statement by declaring his total exhaustion with the current state of Nigeria.
