The Plateau State Police Command has successfully apprehended 20-year-old Jonathan Sambo Bitrus for allegedly defrauding a Point of Sale (PoS) operator of ₦1,550,000.
According to Punch news, the incident took place at the busy Terminus Market in Jos, where the suspect used a clever technical distraction to steal a massive sum of money.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, the suspect reportedly visited a shop and asked the salesgirl, Miss Josephine Morolayo, to check his balance.
He then requested a withdrawal of ₦1,950,000. When handed the PoS machine to enter his PIN, Bitrus secretly accessed the transaction history and showed the girl a previous successful receipt from a different customer, making her believe his transaction had gone through.
After receiving ₦1,550,000 in cash, Bitrus fled the scene before the owner of the shop could return with the balance.
During police interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting that his own bank account was actually empty.
“He confessed that he accessed the victim’s transaction history when she handed him the machine... and upon discovering a previous transaction, he requested for the same amount. He further revealed that he cancelled the transaction but showed her the old receipt,” the police statement read.
The suspect also admitted that he immediately spent a portion of the stolen funds to purchase an iPhone 13 Pro and new clothing. He remains in custody and is expected to be charged in court shortly.
