The Nigerian community in the United States and the academic circle at Fisk University are in mourning following the tragic death of 23-year-old Oluwalayomi “Layo” Fadero.
The promising young graduate was killed instantly last Friday when a criminal suspect, fleeing from Nashville police in a stolen truck, crashed head-on into her vehicle.
Fadero, who had recently completed her degree and was enrolled in an accelerated nursing program, was driving into her neighborhood along Murfreesboro Pike when the collision occurred.
According to Metro Nashville Police and reports from WSMV Nashville, the suspect, 52-year-old Ray Eugene Padgett, was driving at speeds of 80 mph on the wrong side of the road to evade arrest.
The impact was so severe that it forced Fadero’s car 100 yards into a ditch.
Police confirmed she was a completely uninvolved motorist with no connection to the high-speed pursuit.
“She was one of the most compassionate and kindest of people that you would’ve ever met,” said her former professor, Janet Walsh, during a moving tribute.
The suspect, a parolee with over 20 prior convictions, now faces a litany of felony charges, including vehicular homicide and criminally negligent homicide.
A fundraiser has already raised over $13,000 to support her family with funeral costs, as friends describe her death as a "heartbreaking loss" to the community.
