A 24-year-old Nigerian national, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment at the Leicester Crown Court for the "brutal and random" murder of a 56-year-old woman in the United Kingdom.
The sentencing, handed down on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, follows a horrific series of events that began with a cannabis-fueled car rampage through Leicester city centre.
According to Punch news, reports from the Leicestershire Police, Ahanonu was driving dangerously on June 24, 2025, swerving across lanes and running red lights before eventually crashing his vehicle.
After fleeing the crash site, he encountered Nila Patel, who was walking home after getting off a bus.
In an unprovoked attack, Ahanonu assaulted Patel, leaving her with a fractured skull and severe brain trauma.
She tragically succumbed to her injuries two days later.
Upon his arrest, police recovered over £3,000 worth of cannabis and three iPhones from his vehicle. Ahanonu had previously pleaded guilty to:
Dangerous driving
Possession of cannabis with intent to supply
Assaulting an emergency worker (after biting a female police officer during his arrest)
“Ahanonu was unknown to the victim. She was simply walking home when she was subjected to this brutal assault,” Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Emma Matts stated, describing CCTV footage of the events as "frightening and disturbing."
The court commended security personnel from the Leicester Royal Infirmary and members of the public who restrained Ahanonu at the scene until police arrived.
The life sentence marks the conclusion of a case that has shocked the local community and highlighted the devastating consequences of drug-impaired driving and violent crime.
