A horrific accident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport has left at least two people dead after a passenger plane collided with a fire engine on the runway.
The incident occurred late Sunday night, March 22, 2026, forcing an immediate shutdown of the airport as emergency teams scrambled to the scene.
The aircraft, a Jazz Aviation flight operating for Air Canada, had just arrived from Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport with 72 passengers and four crew members on board.
Reports from NBC News and the Port Authority indicate that the jet struck a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle that was already responding to a separate, unrelated incident on the tarmac.
The impact caused severe damage to the nose and cockpit area of the aircraft.
While the airline confirmed the passenger manifest, the identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued a formal statement shortly after the crash:
"At approximately 11.40pm on Sunday, a Jazz Aviation flight operating on behalf of Air Canada was involved in an incident on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport in which the aircraft struck a Port Authority vehicle... the airport is closed while the accident is investigated."
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken over the investigation to determine how the aircraft and the emergency vehicle ended up in a collision path.
Social media footage from the scene shows significant debris on the runway and emergency lights surrounding the mangled jet.
